AUTUMN TERM 2008
We are hoping to start a Photography Club for the Senior School this term and a Netball Club for the Junior School. We are pleased to offer violin lessons with Miho Hakamata who studied under Dr. Suzuki in Japan from an early age and now combines concert performing with teaching. She will also be teaching Piano. Flute lessons are still available with Emma Price and Drums with Steve Bateman. The ‘Life Bus’ visited the school on 15th
and 16th September as part of the Bromley Life Education project
that aims to help primary schools with health education. Pupils
from Nursery to Year 6 spent time in the mobile classroom looking
at topics such as ‘Decisions’, ‘Friends’,
‘Meet the Brain’ and ‘All About Me’.
Monday 22nd September saw the start of our first ever Science Week and began with a ‘Mad Science’ Assembly. The week's events continued on Wednesday 24th with a demonstration of dog training to the whole school by Mr. Barry Blinks, a Kennel Club Dog Trainer.
Mrs. Mohan had several experiments and activities planned for the rest of the week and on Thursday 25th September students from the Senior School demonstrated various aspects of science to the children from the Junior School and staff. On the evening of Thursday 25th September parents of Junior School pupils had the chance to meet their children’s new class teacher at an informal group session. The PTA organised a Barbeque on Saturday 27th September, coinciding with our Open Morning for prospective pupils and a reunion of our first ever Year 6 leavers (2003). This was a chance for families new to the school to socialise with existing families and for prospective parents to find out more about the school in an informal setting. Our 'Class of 2003' have just finished their GCSEs, so we enjoyed seeing how they have changed in the past 5 years and finding out what they are up to now. We were pleased that ten of the class managed to attend despite their busy schedules. The PTA held their AGM on Monday 29th September with a new committee being elected for the coming year. The school had another successful Open Morning on Thursday 2nd October, giving prospective families a chance to see the school during a working day. The children from Year 3 visited Crofton Roman Villa in Orpington on October 2nd as part of their history studies. They had a guided tour and talk from an archaeologist about the discovery and excavation of the site. The school celebrated Harvest Festival in neighbouring St. John's Church on Monday 6th October. Parents were able to join staff and pupils to hear traditional harvest time hymns, songs and readings. Donations of non-perishable groceries were sent to the Salvation Army for distribution. Children from Nursery to Year 2 enjoyed a workshop with 'Drama4ALL' on a 'Circus Adventure' on Thursday 9th October.Following the success of Science Week, a 'Mad Science' club started after haf-term on Thursdays after school. Children from the Nursery to Year 6 celebrated Book
Week on Tuesday 25th November by dressing up as favourite book characters.
Pirates and princesses seemed to be the most popular choice, although
there were also modern children’s favourites such as Horrid
Henry and the Worst Witch as well as a shark and a dinosaur. There
was a Scholastic Book Fair at the school all week and a ‘Poetry
Mania’ Evening on Wednesday 26th which raised £60 for
Cancer Research UK.
On December 4th Years 4-6 experienced a 'Victorian Christmas Day' at Bromley Environmental Education Field Centre and on December 5th Years 7-10 visited the Houses of Parliament followed by a Christmas lunch. The PTA organised a Christmas Fair on Sunday 7th December; this is always a highlight of the year for our younger pupils. There were games and crafts for the children, Santa's Grotto, a Secrets Room and plenty of craft stalls for the parents to indulge in some Christmas shoppping. On Wednesday 10th December the Nursery to Year 2 children presented their annual Christmas concert with a traditional Christmas play, 'The Little Christmas Tree' and a Nativity play.
The children from Nursery to Year 3 had their Christmas Parties on Monday 15th December and children went to sing carols at the residential care home near the school on the afternoon of Tuesday 16th December. The Senior School produced a revue called 'Wickham's got Talent' for the benefit of parents, staff and the Junior School on the afternoon of Thursday 18th December. They did all the planning and organisation themselves and the show was well received by the audience who made donations to the school charity to show their appreciation.
The term finished on Friday 19th December with a Carol Service in St. John's Church, West Wickham. The students were joined by friends and family for the service and for coffee and mince pies at the school afterwards.
SPRING TERM 2009 The new term got underway on January 8th with snow in the playground as an added surprise. We welcomed several new pupils in various classes. The new 'Trim Trail', presented by the PTA, was installed in the grounds over the holidays and will soon be put to good use during breaks, lunch hour and PE lessons. Our designated charity this term is 'Comic Relief'. On Friday 16th January children from Nursery to year 4 had talks on Road Safety from the Bromley Borough Road Safety Officer. Year 6 experienced a 'Victorian School Day' on Wednesday 21st January as part of their History studies with a role play session lead by the Freshwater Theatre Company. The school programme this term includes trips to the Natural History Museum for the Senior School and Reception -Year 2, a visit to the National Gallery for the Senior School, the Year 5 and 6 School Journey and LAMDA choral speaking exams plus the usual range of musical and sporting activities at this time of year. The afterschool 'Mad Science Club' continues this term and we hope to introduce some more afterschool activities and clubs as the days get longer this term.
