On Tuesday 24thMay, Year 6 travelled by bus to the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Centre in Bromley to visit His Honour the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Kathy Bance. The trip was arranged to support the study of government and British Values, as part of Y6’s PSHE curriculum.
We were warmly welcomed by the Mayor and her staff in the Mayor’s Parlour where we were shown the Mayor’s chain of office and other regalia relating to her office. The pupils were allowed to enter the committee rooms where committee meetings are held and they were fascinated to see the ballot boxes being prepared for the local elections taking place on May 3rd for the different boroughs, eg. Bromley, Beckenham etc. They were fascinated by the Mayor’s talk detailing the history of her office and the duties of her office, including the distinction she made between her ceremonial duties and her civic duties.
At the end of her talk, the Mayor encouraged the pupils to engage in a question and answer session. We were very proud of the insightful questions asked by all of our pupils, which reflected well on the school; indeed, the Mayor herself congratulated the children on their intelligent questions.
